How to Clean Suede and Velour Leather the Right Way: The Care Guide for Loafers & Sneakers

Suede and velour leather are among the most elegant — and most delicate — materials in shoemaking. Especially on handcrafted styles like our loafers, proper care pays off twice over: it preserves not just the look, but the value of a shoe that's often made to last for years.

Suede or velour leather? The difference in short

Both materials feel velvety to the touch but differ in how they're made. Suede is tanned from the flesh side (underside) of the hide, which makes it sturdier and usually a bit thicker. Velour leather is created by sanding the smooth grain side of a leather, resulting in a finer, softer surface that's generally more sensitive to moisture and stains. Care for both is nearly identical, which is why we cover them together below.

The right care kit for suede & velour leather

Before you start, it's worth putting together a small basic kit. These four items cover most situations:

• Suede/velour brush (brass brush or combo brush with rubber side): Loosens dust, dirt and dried-on grime without compacting the material.
• Fluorocarbon-based protector spray: Guards against water and grease without changing the colour or clogging the pores.
• Suede eraser: Removes localized stains and roughened spots without abrasion.
• Colour-matched restorer spray (optional): Brings back the original depth of colour on heavily worn shoes.

A good kit usually costs less than €30 and, if stored properly, lasts several years — one of the most cost-effective ways to noticeably extend the life of premium shoes.

Step by step: how to clean suede and velour leather properly

1. Let it dry. Suede and velour leather should never be brushed or treated while wet — moisture only drives dirt deeper into the fibres. Let shoes dry at room temperature, never on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
2. Brush when dry. Brush the brass brush over the material in one direction to remove loose dirt and dust. For heavier soiling, work in small circles with moderate pressure.
3. Treat stains individually. Gently work the suede eraser over individual stains, then brush again to lift the roughened nap back up.
4. Restore colour (if needed). Apply restorer spray thinly and evenly to faded areas, let it dry completely, then give the shoe one final brush.
5. Protect. Finish by spraying evenly from about 20–25 cm away, let dry completely, and repeat every 4–6 weeks with regular wear.

Stubborn stains: rain, grease and salt

Not every stain responds to the same treatment. A few special cases that come up often with suede and velour leather:

• Water marks/rings: Lightly and evenly dampen the entire shoe (not just the affected spot) with a clean, damp cloth, let it dry, then brush. The ring disappears because the whole surface dries evenly.
• Grease stains: Blot immediately with an absorbent cloth (never rub), apply a little talcum powder or cornstarch, leave overnight, then brush gently the next day.
• Salt rings (winter): Dab with a cloth dampened in water and a splash of vinegar, let dry, then brush. Re-apply protector spray afterwards without exception.

Common mistakes that shorten a shoe's lifespan

In practice, we see the same avoidable mistakes come up again and again in customer questions:

• Cleaning while wet instead of waiting until dry.
• Using leather grease or cream on suede/velour leather — these products are made for smooth leather and permanently mat down the fine fibre structure.
• Drying on a radiator, which makes the leather brittle and can distort the fit.
• Protecting only after the first rain instead of preventively, right after purchase.

How often should suede shoes be cared for?

As a rule of thumb: a quick brush refresh after every wear, a thorough clean every two to four weeks with regular use, and a fresh application of protector spray every four to six weeks — or immediately after a thorough clean. Sticking to this rhythm can add several years to the life of a high-quality suede or velour leather shoe.
